Mamdani’s mayoral win: Letters

The Issue: Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s win in the 2025 New York City mayoral race.

Zohran Mamdani voters will pay the price and deserve whatever budget-busting progressive agenda he imposes on them (“Zohran paints the town red,” Nov. 5).

We now have a smooth-talking Marxist — who is anti-Jewish, anti-cop, anti-business and lacks any experience in running this city — as our mayor. You can be sure he will get no financial assistance from the Trump administration.

This is a sad day in the annals of New York.

Everyone knows that for centuries, New York City has always been the beacon of hope for millions of immigrants that have migrated to the United States of America from all over the world.

Therefore, I think Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech was exceptional.

It’s true that the election was not an overwhelming mandate for Mamdani (“No ‘Mamdate’ for Zoh,” Editorial, Nov. 5).

He got about 50% of the vote in a city where 65% of voters are registered Democrats. Still, given his documented anti-Zionist declarations, his election very possibly may be viewed as a license for further Jewish persecution by the antisemitic pro-Palestine movement.

It will be crucial for Mamdani to act decisively against any violent threats and demonstrations to prove his claim of being a mayor for all New Yorkers.

His claim of fairness toward Jews has just been election rhetoric so far as the Jewish community is concerned. Will he back it up with actions?

I am no stranger to political campaigns. I served as East Hampton’s town Republican chairman for nine years, and my father ran for governor on the GOP line against Hugh Carey in 1978.

Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral race may be a surprise to some, but his win was indirectly aided by the New York Post breaking one of the cardinal rules of campaigning: Do not give undue exposure to your opponent.

In an attempt to discredit Mamdani’s efforts, The Post featured him on the front page innumerable times, thereby giving him millions of dollars of free advertising.

To the uninitiated voter, if you see someone’s picture in a campaign setting enough times, you may want to trend that way on Election Day.

Perhaps the clearest message of all as a result of Tuesday’s election results was for the benefit of congressional Republicans: Get off your knees and stop being a rubber stamp for a president who is out of control, not getting the job done economically and simultaneously angering and frightening the whole country.

Most New York City voters bought what the snake-oil salesman was selling. Do these voters really believe that everything’s going to be “free”? Elections have consequences, and now the city will see what those consequences are.

After President Gerald Ford denied New York a federal bailout 50 years ago, “Ford to City: Drop Dead” instantly became one of the 20th century’s most famous headlines. New York rose from that financial abyss and re-asserted itself as the world’s No. 1 city.

I hope that Mamdani’s term as mayor doesn’t spell another need for a federal bailout from a far less sympathetic president.
