Around January 2024, when the 28-year-old was with the Milwaukee Bucks, “at least one prominent U.S. sportsbook detected unusual heavy betting interest on Beasley’s statistics,” ESPN’s report said.

Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, stressed that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

“An investigation is not a charge,” he said. “Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. constitution. As of now he has not been charged with anything.”

Beasley and the Pistons were in talks on a three-year, $42 million contract to keep him in Detroit, but contract discussions have been paused, per ESPN.

“We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told ESPN.

Former Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned by the NBA for life last year after he was found to have manipulated his participation in a game to influence the outcome of a bet.

Additionally, the NBA has investigated Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier due to gambling allegations earlier this year, but the veteran guard has yet to be charged of any wrongdoing.

The Beasley report comes just a day before the NBA’s free agency period begins on Monday.

He is now set to become an unrestricted free agent following a breakout season with the Pistons.

Beasley concluded a career-reviving 2024-25 season in Detroit, averaging a team-high 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while connecting on a franchise-record 319 3-pointers at a 41.6 percent clip.

He appeared in all 82 regular-season games, including 18 starts, and added 14 points per game during Detroit’s six-game playoff series against the New York Knicks.

Those standout numbers were expected to make Beasley a sought-after free agent, but that’s now cloudy given the current investigation.
