MAGA voters overwhelmingly support US strikes on Iranian military: poll

An overwhelming number of self-described “MAGA Republicans” would back US strikes against Iranian military outposts and other infrastructure amid Israel’s military campaign against the theocratic regime, a new poll found.

A whopping 65% of “MAGA Republicans” would back strikes on Iran, compared to a paltry 19% opposed, which even eclipses the support for such military action among more traditional Republicans, according to a J.L. Partners survey shared exclusively with The Post.

By contrast, self-described “traditional” Republicans would back strikes against Iran 51% to 28%. Meanwhile, Republican voters writ large would support the US government launching strikes on Iran by 58% to 25%, with 17% neutral or unsure, per the poll.

“This poll makes clear: the Republican base is not isolationist. They back forceful U.S. and Israeli action to stop Iran, and see Israel’s fight as America’s fight,” James Johnson, co-founder of the New York-based J.L. Partners, assessed in a statement.

Amid the budding Mideast conflict, President Trump’s approval rating among his base his high, with 95% of voters who backed him in 2024 approving of his performance and 84% of those voters approving of his handling of the Israel-Iran conflict.

Among Americans writ large, 46% approve of Trump’s navigation of the conflict thus far, while 40% disapprove.

The findings come in the midst of a dramatic schism between high-profile MAGA world figures over Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran last week as part of a state campaign to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuke.

Key MAGA world figures such as right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson, “War Room” podcast host Steve Bannon and firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) have urged the US not to get involved with the simmering conflict.

Trump has backed Israel in the fight and helped defend it from Iran’s retaliatory attacks, but so far refrained from carrying out offensive strikes on Iran.

He’s also lashed out at critics, calling Carlson “kooky” and insisting that as the pioneer of “America First,” he gets to determine what that foreign policy doctrine means.

Bannon has since predicted that, despite his objections, most of the MAGA movement will ultimately “get on board” with Trump if he decides to attack Iran.

“I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn Wednesday when asked about whether he intends to attack Iran.

J.L. Partners’ poll also found that GOP voters and the MAGA base are deeply wary of Iran and very supportive of Israel’s military campaign against the theocratic regime.

A firm 60% of Trump’s voters, 63% of Republicans and 67% of MAGA Republicans believe that Israel’s war is America’s war and want the US to support the Jewish state in the conflict, the poll found.

When asked about Israel’s preemptive strikes, 81% of MAGA Republicans support it, with 59% of MAGA Republicans and 52% of Republicans generally believing the war should rage on until Iran’s nuclear program is taken out.

Many analysts believe that Israel lacks the ability to destroy Iran’s nuclear program completely without US support, particularly the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, which is buried about half a mile under a mountain.

Military experts believe US bombers with heavy bunker buster bombs would be needed to destroy that facility, though there is some uncertainty about whether even those weapons could achieve that objective.

The poll also found that 73% of Americans overall believe that a nuclear-armed Iran “cannot be allowed.”

The J.L. Partners survey was taken from June 16-17 and sampled 1,039 registered voters with an oversample of 624 Republicans.

It had a margin or error of plus or minus 3 percentage points on the national sample and 3.9 percentage points on the Republican sample.
