LSU’s Lane Kiffin claims Ole Miss fans tried to run him off the road

New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said there are no hard feelings after claiming Ole Miss fans tried to run him and his son, Knox, off the road as they left Mississippi for Baton Rouge on Sunday.

During his introductory press conference Monday, Kiffin explained why he didn’t let his emotions get the best of him when Rebels fans booed as he left Oxford.

“It was very hard and it was really challenging,” Kiffin said at Tiger Stadium. “It’s the passion of the SEC. I understand that. I don’t get emotional with it…

“… That airport scene, and Knox and I driving and people trying to run us off the road, man, and the things they said to us.

“And then we got here [to Baton Rouge], and we had been here for six minutes [and fans are saying], ‘We love you, Coach. You’re the best ever.’

“That’s the SEC, I’ve been around long enough to know that, and it’s just the passion of the SEC.

“I’m not upset at those reactions by fans, by people. I think that people get really upset when you leave somewhere because they feel hurt because you’re doing a really good job.

“They ain’t going to the airport and driving from all over, okay, to say those things and yell those things and try to run you off the road if you were doing bad.

“So I just look at it as passionate people in the SEC, and then it means they really liked what we were doing there.”

Kiffin added that he hopes Rebels fans will remember the six historic seasons while he was at the helm.

“Time heals a lot of things, and having gone through this in this conference before, I sure hope that happens,” he said.

A decision on Kiffin’s future was expected to be announced on Saturday, following the Rebels’ 38-19 Egg Bowl victory over Mississippi State on Friday.

Kiffin announced he was taking his talents to Baton Rouge in a social media post on Sunday.

It comes after he was at the center of months-long coaching rumors following the firing of LSU coach Brian Kelly in October.

Florida, which fired Brian Napier in October, dropped out of the sweepstakes for Kiffin and hired former Tulane coach Jon Sumrall.

Longtime Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding was elevated to the post vacated by Kiffin.
