“We sold 56 pizzas on the first day of opening, so I wrote it down as a nostalgic thing to look back at, but I kept writing it down as the years went by,” Jonny Dawson, owner of Jonny D’s in Huntington Station, told The Post.

“Then, a few weeks ago, I realized we were approaching one million and thought, ‘let’s have a little fun with this.’”

Dawson and his staff leaned into the pie phenomenon and announced a contest on social media: the person who bought all or a slice of the one millionth pie would win a pizza a week through November 2026.

“If it was a delivery, I was going to jump in the car with maybe one or two of the other guys who work here,” said 44-year-old Dawson, a former insurance salesman who traded a desk for his countertop.

“We were just going to bring a couple of balloons and a couple of streamers and shoot it by the person’s front door,” added the owner, who convinced his dad to take out a home equity loan to start the pizzeria almost 21 years ago.

He said the move brought in tons of new business, with folks clamoring for 52 weeks of free grub. But ultimately, it was one of his most loyal customers who took the cake — or, rather, pie.

“I was sitting on the floor of my new apartment in 2009, eating this pizza before I had furniture,” said winner Keesha Bailey, a 41-year-old single mom of four who lives nearby and “never won anything” in her life.

Peace of pizza

“It’s tremendously helpful just to get a little break, I know one day out of the week, I don’t have to worry about cooking,” added Bailey, who several customers congratulated after hearing the news Tuesday.

Bailey had come into the pizzeria earlier Saturday for a quick lunch. She had let Dawson know her family would need a pie later in the day for her 15-year-old son, Rasiere, and a few of his teammates from Huntington High School’s football team.

“I said, I’ll be back around 3:15-3:30 after the game,” she said of the fateful half-regular, half-pepperoni order. “I had no idea this contest was a whole thing.”

She returned with her two littlest ones, 12-year-old boy Raquiese and 14-year-old daughter Mikiyla-Racquel, and got the saucy surprise.

“We put a hair trigger on a balloon contraption, so it was ready to pull down, and everybody in the back came out with streamers,” Dawson said of the moment captured on video.

“I had no idea what was going on at first,” said Bailey, whose oldest son, 21-year-old Raseac, plays college football upstate at Morrisville.

“Then right away my kids were like, ‘We are eating pizza every single day,’” added the office manager in Melville, who admitted her athlete kids have championship-sized appetites.

Rasiere’s pals on varsity will also reap the benefits, as his mom is a regular contributor to the squad’s weekly pregame potluck with goodies like homemade ribs and banana pudding.

“He’s already getting texts from teammates, ‘pizza on you?’” she laughed.

“Jokes aside, it just helps me take a weight off my shoulders in not having to worry about food sometimes.”
