‘Live’ Celebrates “National ‘Golden Girls’ Day” With Guest Host David Muir and Kelly Ripa Sporting “‘Golden Girls’ Hair”

Live with Kelly and Mark thanked The Golden Girls for being a friend this morning.

Kelly Ripa and David Muir, who filled in for Mark Consuelos on Wednesday, honored the 40th anniversary of the ’80s sitcom starring Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty on what also aligns with National Cheesecake Day.

“It’s National Golden Girls day,” Ripa exclaimed.

After a clip from the theme song played over the speakers, she shared that the series “has been streamed over 1 billion hours globally,” and that all seven seasons of the show are now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Ripa also pointed out a Golden Girls-inspired trend taking place online.

“I don’t know if you’ve been watching on Instagram,” she said, “because the Golden Girls played these senior citizens, but they were our age.”

Muir quipped, “Don’t you love this? I’m sure you’ve seen it on Instagram. They’ll say, like, Blanche was 45 at the time, or 50 years old.”

Ripa then brought up how people are putting “Golden Girls hair” on stars like J. Lo and Nicole Kidman.

“Have you seen it on Instagram? It’s really very funny what Golden Girls hair does,” she teased. “So I asked them to do a Golden Girls hairstyle on me to see.”

After unveiling the picture of the Golden Girls-ified picture of Ripa, in which she sported a gray curly bob, she deemed the picture “amazing.” Live EP Michael Gelman made sure to include Muir, saying that they “also did one” for the World News Tonight host at his news desk.

“Tonight,” Muir teased in his signature line’s tone. “People would pay attention to the news if I looked like that, right?”

Ripa added, “It does lend a certain sort of… you suddenly have seniority.”

Muir joked, “By the way, I am convinced that is what I look like on the inside.”

Ripa echoed, “Same, I am a Golden Girl.”

After Muir said that he and Ripa “are the same age right now” as the Golden Girls stars when they were on the series, Ripa refuted that they “are younger” than her and Muir.

“We’re giving ourselves too much credit,” she quipped.

Muir praised the “one-liners” from the series as being “ahead of their time” on issues that are still prevalent today.

“Those women were so brave and so ahead of their time in those characters,” he added.

Ripa agreed, wishing live a “happy Golden Girls Day.”

Muir joked, “And for Gelman, I will dress like that tonight at 6:30.”
