“Just super cool,” he said. “Super surreal. Super humbled. Blessed.
“I walked in here and seen it for the first time, and it was like an emotional moment as well.”
Topps revealed the tribute just hours before James and the Lakers tipped off at Golden 1 Center, announcing it started the commemoration this week because Sacramento is where James first began his Hall of Fame career in 2003.
The emblem features Cavaliers, Heat and Lakers colors, as well as the words “NBA seasons” and the No. 23. It also has a silhouette of James throwing chalk in the air.
James said it all had him reflecting on his career as he got set for the matchup against the Kings.
“I just started thinking about the whole, from the beginning to where we are now,” he said. “It’s been a heck of a journey.”
The Lakers, though, ended up losing on James’ big night, 124-112. But he nonetheless praised Topps and the NBA for making the salute happen.
“Super grateful,” he said. “Super surreal.”
