When it comes to the Jets quarterback situation, Kirk Herbstreit has his thoughts.
The ESPN college football analyst and color commentator for Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” broadcast weighed in on how the Jets — who lost 27-14 to the Patriots — should approach things when it comes to their future at the crucial position.

Justin Fields has one more year on his contract, Tyrod Taylor will be a free agent and the Jets don’t have an heir apparent to take over the position for the long haul.
“The question is, what do you do about the quarterback position?” Herbstreit asked. “Justin Fields is under contract next year, do you make the move in free agency? Do you go through the draft next year? Do you wait?”
The analyst noted that this year hasn’t been a monster year for quarterbacks in college football, and the 2027 draft class might be the year with more talent at quarterback.
“So do you go for a stopgap Kirk Cousins-type guy for ‘26 and use that draft capital in other areas to get stronger,” he continued. “And then go for the home run potential in ‘27. That’s probably the direction I would go. A lot of people are thinking Arch Manning. He was supposed to be a guy, maybe that’s going to come out this year.
“He hasn’t announced anything. My guess is he’ll come back to college for one more year, so he might be the guy in ‘27 that maybe the Jets could possibly hold out and get him that following year.”

The Jets’ plan at QB is sure to be a question that continues to follow them as the season drags on, though their luck at developing players at the position has not been great.
Former first-round picks Sam Darnold, taken in the 2018 draft, and Zach Wilson, selected in 2021, never materialized into what the organization had hoped for and were eventually sent elsewhere.
Darnold has now had successive strong seasons in Minnesota and Seattle.
In the Thursday loss, Fields threw for just 116 yards with 67 rushing yards, adding one touchdown through the air and another on the ground.
