Kirk Cousins’ reaction to Falcons drafting Michael Penix revealed in ‘Quarterback’ trailer

Kirk Cousins likely didn’t expect his first season with the Falcons to take the turn it did, otherwise he may not have accepted a spot in Netflix’s “Quarterback” show.

The show released its trailer Monday morning for the second season, where the Omaha Productions/NFL Films/2PM Productions docuseries follows quarterbacks Cousins, Jared Goff and Joe Burrow during this past NFL season.

Included in the trailer was the moment Cousins, who was fresh off signing a four-year, $180-million deal with Atlanta, saw the team select fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the draft.

The show’s typical positive manner took a turn when the trailer revealed a title card that read, “All the Heartbreak,” and cut to Cousins detailing his decision to leave the Vikings for a more long-term situation with the Falcons.

It quickly cut to Cousins’ in-season benching and the visuals of Atlanta drafting Penix with the No. 7 pick.

“I was surprised when the NFL draft happened,” a disappointed Cousins is heard saying in the trailer.

In the first season of the show, it followed Marcus Mariota alongside the then-Viking Cousins and Patrick Mahomes.

Mariota was also benched mid-season for the Falcons during his run on the show, and the production team elected to phase him out of the show a bit — so, the options for how they follow Cousins’ similar situation will be intriguing.

The show’s other season-two participants, Burrow and Goff, also suffered some heartbreak during the past season, which will also likely be covered under the “All the Heartbreak” umbrella of the show, which is released on July 8.

Goff’s Lions were the top team in the NFL heading into the playoffs before bowing out early in a gut-punch of a loss to the Commanders.

As for Burrow, the trailer shows the headlines from when his home was broken into during the season, so that situation also made it into the trailer. Burrow also failed to reach the playoffs.
