“I interviewed Alan Jackson, the famed, esteemed criminal defense attorney, and all of a sudden, unexpectedly, surprise guest, Karen Read,” she revealed.
Read was accused of killing her boyfriend, a police officer named John O’Keefe, by hitting him with her car in 2022. In June 2025, following two buzzy trials, Read was acquitted of second degree murder, operating a motor vehicle manslaughter while under the influence, and leaving the scene of a collision that led to O’Keefe’s death, per NBC News.
For those that didn’t catch the interview on Tuesday night (Jan. 13), Ripa said that the podcast episode will become available to non-Sirius XM subscribers on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Mark Consuelos likened he experience to Ripa’s “Super Bowl,” which she echoed.
“That was my Super Bowl, and it was easily the most fascinating conversation I’ve ever had, both legally [and] emotionally,” she gushed. “It was a tour de force. I was mesmerized by the law, the constitutional law, the criminal justice system.”
Ripa said that she got “real insight,” teasing that she considers herself an “attorney” because she watches Court TV.

“But when push comes to shove, no. No, in fact that does not make me a lawyer at all,” she added.
Consuelos noted that Ripa “dedicated a lot of time” to tuning in to Read’s trial, explaining that she “would be working” on Live when the trial started, and she would play catch up.
Ripa agreed, “I listened to every podcast, I watched every documentary, I watched gavel-to-gavel coverage on Court TV, including one time when I was on an airplane. We had to fly to Italy, and I had to VPN my location so that I could force the system to allow me to connect to the wi-fi. I was doing tech stuff. I don’t do tech, and I was doing tech. I was determined to watch this trial.”
She also told Live that she “was bringing up things, facts, that [she] thought [she] completely, comprehensively understood,” teasing again that she is an “at-home Court TV attorney.”
“And I had gotten so much wrong. There was so much I didn’t understand,” she admitted. “I am telling you, it was a fascinating podcast.”
Ripa described the episode as “a lesson in the law” and “a lesson in the criminal justice system.”
“I couldn’t sleep last night because I was like, ‘Who else can I call to discuss this?’” she recalled.
Consuelos joked, “Did you look over to me and you were like, ‘Nope, not talking to him about it.’”
Ripa replied, “I’m not talking to him about it because he doesn’t care. But I cared deeply, and I got so many phone calls from people who were listening live.”
Consuelos told Ripa, “You were so excited. I’m so happy for you.”
