Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos talk politics after Jimmy Kimmel ABC return

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos made rare political comments to show their support for Jimmy Kimmel.

On Wednesday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” the couple reacted to “Jimmy Kimmel Live! returning to ABC, the same network that airs their morning talk show, after Kimmel’s program was briefly suspended.

“Jimmy Kimmel returned to his show last night, and listen, we know him personally, and when I tell you he’s one of the kindest, most generous people I know,” Consuelos, 54, said. “He takes care of his family, crew, his staff, everybody. He really, really cares.”

“He cares about people,” Ripa, 54, added of Kimmel, 57.

Consuelos praised Kimmel’s Tuesday night monologue and said the comedian “was very humble in his speech.”

“One thing we can all agree on as a country is the First Amendment is really important,” the “Riverdale” alum continued. “We do a light show here. We don’t talk about any politics here. We just don’t do it. We know our fans at home want an escape from all of that. And we agree. We want an escape from all of that.”

But Consuelos added “that we all are free, because you never know, we could say something crazy tomorrow, and we’re gone.”

The father of three also addressed that both shows air on ABC, saying, “It’s not lost on us that we’re sitting here in the Disney building, our home here, and I think it was the right thing to do for the company to bring him back.”

Ripa noted that the country is at an “inflection point where no matter what you say, somebody is upset.”

“I think everybody needs to take a step back and really think about, you know — I have a right to speak, and you have a right to say horrible things to me on Instagram,” Ripa said. “That’s the pleasure of living in a free society.”

Consuelos chimed in again to state that he has “dear friends” on both sides of the political spectrum and loves them all regardless of their opinions.

“This is a free society, a free country,” Consuelos said, as Ripa added, “Everybody’s welcome at our table.”

ABC took “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off the air last week because of the host’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Kimmel, who has been hosting his show since 2003, claimed that Kirk’s alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, was likely affiliated with the MAGA movement.

The ABC program was suspended last Wednesday, but after facing swift backlash, Disney announced Kimmel’s return to late-night days later. The company did, however, call Kimmel’s comments “ill-timed and thus insensitive.”

Kimmel addressed his remarks about Kirk’s killing during his monologue on Tuesday.

“You understand that it was never my intention to make light of a murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” he said, adding, “I understand that to some, that felt either ill-timed or unclear, or maybe both, and for those who think I did point a finger, I get why you’re upset.”

“This show is not important,” Kimmel also told viewers. “What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.”
