“And further proof—and I cannot stress this enough—the only way we win an Emmy is to sleep through the Emmys,” she quipped.
Consuelos added, “My gosh, we were in bed early Friday night.”
Ripa explained that she and her husband had “a very busy day” on Friday, noting that she was asleep by 8:45 while Consuelos “was probably out by 9.”
“Sound asleep,” she continued. “The dog, because she hadn’t been let out for her night pee, woke us at 2 a.m. At 2 a.m. to go out for her night pee, we do what we always do, which is we grab our phones to sort of illuminate the room. And we have 70 text messages, which to us, means that something bad has happened to one of our parents.”
According to Ripa, she and Consuelos were “terrified to click on the text messages.” While Consuelos said he caught on after seeing his texts were from “everybody from work,” the first text message Ripa saw was from their youngest son, Joaquin.
“So I was like oh no, something bad has happened,” she recalled. “You of course click in the normal order, and I click in the order of whatever message I got lost, which was from Joaquin. And he’s asking me to send him a picture of him with long, curly hair. And then you said, ‘Hey, we won an Emmy!’ And I was like, we only win Emmys when we’re asleep.”
Consuelos chimed in, “Last year, same thing.”
Ripa said they were “sound asleep” when they won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Talk Host in 2024, concluding that they “need to be put to bed on Emmy night” to get the same results.
“We need to be put to sleep if we are going to win an Emmy,” she added.
Consuelos clarified, “I wouldn’t say put to sleep. Not put down.”
Ripa agreed, “Not put down.”
They gave Gelman the chance to thank the Live team, as he highlighted that “it takes a village.” He also thanked the Academy for honoring their show. Ripa echoed his sentiments, lauding the show as “a labor of love.”
“We do it with a very small, tiny group of people. Gelman has vowed to buy each and every one of our staff an Emmy, which is amazing. Gelman, that is so generous,” she teased. “Alright fine, I’ll buy everyone an Emmy.”
Ripa said “it’s a true honor” and that they “couldn’t do it without” Live‘s “incredible group” of staff, as well as the “incredible audience.”
“Our show does not typically win the Emmy for best show, but I will say you guys give us the Emmy everyday,” she shared.
As Ripa and Consuelos congratulated each other, Ripa praised him as Live‘s “lucky charm.”
Consuelos quipped, “We’ll see about that next year.”
