Katie Porter’s meltdown shows how clueless and coddled Dems are

California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter will answer any question you might have for her with one of her own: How dare you?

Porter’s trainwreck of a recent interview with a local CBS affiliate went viral this week, earning the former Democratic congresswoman sharp rebukes from conservative critics and fellow progressives alike.

After being asked by investigative reporter Julie Watts what she would say to the 40% of the Golden State electorate that voted for Donald Trump, Porter bristled, then laughed at her interlocutor.

She complained that Watts was being “argumentative,” then threatened to walk out on the conversation (“I’m gonna call it”), after which she declared that she’s “never had to do this before — ever,” and explained: “I don’t want to have an unhappy experience with you, and I don’t want this all on camera.”

Too late.

Porter’s meltdown was a brilliant distillation of what makes her perhaps the least likeable figure to take up what is probably the least likeable profession.

Not to mention a testament to the temper that once allegedly caused her to pour a pot of boiling potatoes over her ex-husband’s head.

And her indignant reaction to an exceedingly simple question, which resembled a “Colbert Report”-style parody of a narcissistic, self-loathing mediocrity with a startling intolerance for anything other than gushing praise, shows just how much trouble she and her party are in.

Many blue-state Democrats — the kind that will be launching campaigns for the White House in the coming years — aren’t just confined to ideological bubbles in which men can become women, Hamas fights for a cause worth marching for, and anything less than an open border is a crime against humanity.

They’re stranded on their own individual islands, where they’ve constructed Stonehenge-esque monuments to their own righteous genius and political prowess.

Katie Porter is a 51-year-old former law professor and federal lawmaker, yet she’s never had to grapple with a few follow-up questions that she didn’t deem sufficiently deferential?

Her palpable disgust at the suggestion that she might need to appeal to those who don’t already agree with her in statewide race shows exactly why Democrats continue to struggle.

It was another bubble-trapped Californian, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was laughed out of the 2020 Democratic primary before losing every single swing state to Donald Trump in last fall’s presidential election.

On the campaign trail six years ago, Harris demonstrated time and time again that she wasn’t ready for prime time.

And in 2024, it became clear that even spending a few years on the national stage, a heartbeat away from the presidency, hadn’t made up for the lifetime of flattery-heavy coasting she’d enjoyed as a member of Team Blue in California.

Remember, she blew up her campaign last year after she told the ladies of “The View” — not exactly a hostile audience — that there wasn’t a “thing” she would have done differently than her historically unpopular boss, Joe Biden.

“And I’ve been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact,” she added.

Yeah, that’s what everyone was worried about, Madam Vice President.

The tendency to do irreparable damage to one’s reputation after being asked an easily-anticipated question is a reflection of some Democrats’ ego, others’ cluelessness, and the entire rotten party’s jaw-dropping sense of entitlement.

America’s liberal establishment coddles its “stars” through cozy, monocultural schools, workplaces and campaigns, churning out — with the help of a friendly Fourth Estate — a collection of helpless duds who are equal parts dumbfounded and outraged by any setting that doesn’t bend to their will.

Hence Porter’s meltdown, Harris’s defeat, and their party’s failure to connect with a critical mass of the country.

Why are Americans — even despite their mixed feelings about Donald Trump — so down on the donkeys?

Because Democratic leaders have spent so long enjoying the cushy, bountiful, impenetrable pasture they’ve created for themselves that they can no longer even feign a tolerance for the real world — or those who inhabit it.
