Julie Bowen “Didn’t Think” She’d Return In ‘Happy Gilmore 2,’ Praises Adam Sandler As “The Kindest” and “Nicest”: “He’s Got To Have A Younger Woman In This One”

Julie Bowen is making her return to the world of Happy Gilmore, though she was not so sure she would get another swing at it.

Bowen sat down with Michael Rosenbaum on Tuesday’s episode of his Inside of You podcast, where she discussed reprising her role as Virginia Venit in Netflix‘s sequel.

“I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” she admitted. “I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2.

Fortunately, Bowen said that she had a blast returning for the upcoming film, lauding all Adam Sandler productions as “fun.” Happy Gilmore 2 marks Bowen and Sandler’s third collaboration, following the 1996 comedy and 2020’s Hubie Halloween.

“He’s the kindest, nicest, he really is,” she gushed of Sandler. “And his wife is there, and his kids are there.”

Outside of Bowen and Sandler, other actors returning for the sequel include Christopher McDonald , Ben Stiller , and Dennis Dugan , who directed the original Happy Gilmore. The sequel is being helmed by Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, What We Do in the Shadows) with a script written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy.

While Bowen later reiterated that she was “surprised” to be in the movie, she conceded that she is not in the new film for very long.

“I’m in it for like a heartbeat. I’m in it for nothing,” she explained. “And Adam’s like, ‘Stop saying that! You’re the heart of the movie!’”

Bowen, who had a stellar comedic turn as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, spoke with DECIDER last fall about changing things up in Peacock‘s horror series Hysteria!

“Yeah, I don’t want to try to recreate Claire Dunphy. She is her own person and I would happily play her should Modern Family ever come back,” she shared. “But just to put her on a different show and go, “Well, this is what I could do,” I think it would be boring and I don’t think people would appreciate it. As an actor, it’s exciting to take on a new challenge, so I thought that this subverted that nicely. You think that this is just another mom for while in the pilot and then you go, ‘Or is she?’”

Happy Gilmore 2 hits Netflix on July 25.
