Jonathan Kuminga signs two-year, $48.5M Warriors contract

The Warriors have finally answered one of their biggest questions of the offseason. At least for the immediate future.

Golden State and Jonathan Kuminga agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Nevertheless, the NBA insider added that the second year of the deal has a team option that is “designed for the contract to be ripped up” and allow Kuminga to jump into free agency.

The deal comes just one day before the deadline to sign a qualifying offer.

Charania also said Kuminga shot down a three-year, $75 million contract so that he could hit unrestricted free agency sooner. If he had signed the qualifying offer, Kuminga, 22, would have made $7.9 million for the 2025-26 season.

At the end of last week, Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, told the “Hoop Collective” podcast that the forward was prepared to take a one-year contract if the team did not include a player option in a new offer. But finally, what had been a protracted contract stalemate comes to a close.

Now, where Kuminga fits in on coach Steve Kerr’s Warriors will be an interesting storyline to watch as the team also reached a verbal agreement on a multiyear contract with veteran center Al Horford on Sunday.

After averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds over 24.3 minutes in the regular season last year, he played in just three contests out of seven in the team’s first-round win over the Rockets, suiting up for 7:21 in his final appearance.

He did, however, play well in the second round with three games with 20 or more points after Steph Curry was sidelined with an injury.
