Jodie Foster reveals ‘challenging’ process of prepping for French-speaking role

“I went [to Paris] three weeks before shooting and just didn’t speak English at all and immersed myself so my tongue would get used to it,” she told Page Six exclusively at the film’s New York Film Festival premiere on Sunday.

The Oscar winner, 62, studied French as a child at the Lycée Français school in Los Angeles and is fluent.

However, she admitted to being a tad “rusty” because “when I’m in the States for a long time, I don’t speak the language at all!”

Foster added that she’s done “quite a few” movies in French, but not “one where I speak as much and I had a lot to do and it was a challenge.”

Foster immersed herself in the Parisian lifestyle to prepare for the role.
She plays an American psychoanalyst in Paris, and shared that her reticence speaking French “gave the character something interesting.”

“The Silence of the Lambs” star plays an American psychoanalyst in the black comedy in which she investigates a patient’s suspected murder. 

She confessed that her usual confidence was slightly wobbly because of the language differences, but explained that her reticence “gave the character something interesting, actually.

“She was worried that she was never at the top of her game,” the actress told us.

Foster, who began her career as a child star and successfully transitioned into a respected actress, acknowledged that she has had a rich and unusual life, but chooses not to focus on it.

“I think the key is not to look back too much,” “The Accused” star explained, but confessed to sometimes being gobsmacked by her past.

“I’m always reminded of stories that are now amazing,” she said. “My sons will say something about Andy Warhol and I’ll say, ‘Oh, I knew Andy Warhol….’ It didn’t seem weird at the time but now that I’m getting older, the opportunities that I had are now starting to sink in.”
