Jets injuries provide mystery to Aaron Glenn’s never-ending QB carousel

The Jets have another quarterback mystery this week as they prepare for their game with the Jaguars on Sunday. 

Tyrod Taylor left Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins after six plays due to a groin injury.

Justin Fields, who Taylor had replaced, was inactive for the game due to a knee injury.

Brady Cook, an undrafted rookie, played in Taylor’s place on Sunday and may get his first start in Jacksonville this week. 

Welcome to the Jets, where the quarterback carousel seemingly never stops spinning. 

Jets coach Aaron Glenn did not have any medical updates on Taylor or Fields when he spoke to the media on Monday morning.

He said he expects to know more before the Jets next practice on Wednesday.

The quarterback uncertainty is another twist in Glenn’s first season on the job. 

“That’s the tough part about this job,” Glenn said. “This job is meant for tough people, and you have to make decisions on the fly every now and then and this is just one of those times we’ll have to make a decision. You got to see how the guys are feeling. Have a good conversation with those guys, have a good conversation with our docs and we’ll move forward from there. I mean, no one said it was going to be easy and you’re right this is a situation even as an assistant coach I haven’t seen a situation like this, but it is what it is, and I have full confidence in our guys. If they say they’re ready to go, they’ll be ready to go. Then with our docs letting us know if those guys are really ready to go out there for us.” 

This is just the latest twist in the quarterback drama this season.

Fields began the year as the starter after the Jets gave him $30 million guaranteed this offseason and named him the starter immediately.

He missed one game with a concussion and Taylor started.

Then, Fields returned but was largely ineffective.

Glenn bristled at the idea of benching Fields after a dismal loss to the Broncos, but did just that a week later at halftime of a loss to the Panthers. 

Following that benching, Glenn would not say who would start against the Bengals, though most expected Glenn to turn to Taylor.

It then came out that Taylor had a knee injury and was inactive that week, giving Fields a reprieve.

He played well against the Bengals and then started two more games before Glenn benched him and gave Taylor the job.

Taylor made three starts before exiting Sunday’s game after two drives. 

That led to Cook making his first appearance in an NFL game.

Cook looked nervous early but settled down later in the game.

He did have two interceptions but overall he did not look lost out there.

The Jets were already down 21-0 when Cook entered the game.

“I thought Brady did some good things,” Glenn said. “Listen, he was put in a tough situation and it’s always tough for a backup quarterback to actually go in and get the rhythm that he needs from not getting as many reps as you want to get during the week, but I thought he had true command of the offense. I thought he really had true command of the huddle with the players. Again, it’s a tough situation because of the score at that point put him in a situation where he had to drop back and throw the ball probably a little bit more than we wanted him to. But I thought he handled that well.” 

Glenn made it clear that he will start whichever quarterback he believes can help them win the game against the Jaguars.

He was not interested in a suggestion from a reporter that he may want to see how Fields plays after being on the bench for two weeks. 

“We don’t play mind games with players like that,” Glenn said. “These guys are professionals, and they work their asses off week in and week out and my job is to make sure that with this team I give them the best chance to win. So whichever quarterback that we have that’s ready to go, that guy will be ready to go.”
