While we’ll have to wait a while longer to see what showrunner Tim Minear has in store for the characters after their massive Season 8 loss, we finally have a filming update on the series!
Is 9-1-1 on tonight, July 10? How many episodes are in 9-1-1 Season 8? Has ABC renewed 9-1-1 for a Season 9? And if so, when does 9-1-1 return with new episodes on ABC and when does 9-1-1 filming start?
Here’s everything to know about the future of 9-1-1, including 9-1-1‘s Season 9 premiere date info, filming updates, and more.
Is 9-1-1 On Tonight (7/10/25)?
If you turn on ABC tonight, Thursday, July 10, 2025, hoping to watch a new episode of 9-1-1, you’re unfortunately out of luck. In place of 9-1-1 Season 8 reruns, ABC will be airing the Season 11 premiere of Celebrity Family Feud, starring Taraji P. Henson vs. Jennifer Hudson and The Dan Patrick Show vs. The Rich Eisen Show.
How Many Episodes Are In 9-1-1 Season 8?
9-1-1 Season 8 consisted of 18 episodes, which means Season 8, Episode 18, “Seismic Shifts,” which aired on Thursday, May 15, was the Season 8 finale. So the question now is…
Ring the alarm! 9-1-1 is returning for Season 9! On April 3, 2025, Deadline reported that ABC gave 9-1-1 an early Season 9 renewal, which came as no surprise considering the series is a top performer for the network that earns millions of views across platforms. ABC also reported that the series ranked fourth for the network’s 2024/2025 broadcast season.
When Does 9-1-1 Return With New Episodes On ABC? 9-1-1 Season 9 Premiere Date:
So when will 9-1-1 return with new episodes? Fans have been eagerly awaiting a 9-1-1 Season 9 premiere date since May, and though an official return date has yet to be announced, ABC confirmed the series will return in fall 2025 and continue to air on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by episodes of Ryan Murphy’s new spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville. For reference, Season 8 premiered on September 26, 2024. So perhaps Season 9 will opt for another late September return.
Is 9-1-1 Season 9 Filming?
While we have yet to hear when 9-1-1 will be back on our screens, thanks to a recent Jennifer Love Hewitt interview with ScreenRant, we now have a key update on Season 9 filming. When asked when 9-1-1 goes back into production, Hewitt replied, “Oh my gosh — in a couple weeks. Yeah, we’re back in a couple weeks, so I’ll be back answering phones and in a totally different trauma than this one [I Know What You Did Last Summer], which is great.” Per @911TVNEWS, Season 9 filming is set to begin on July 22, so stay tuned for BTS posts from set.
What Will 9-1-1 Season 9 Look Like?
If you’re looking for a full 9-1-1 Season 8 finale rundown, Decider’s got you covered. Despite fan pleas for Minear to rewrite Bobby’s death and bring Peter Krause back to the show, the 118 captain appeared to be gone for good at the end of the eighth season. You can read Part 1 of our Season 8 post-mortem interview with Anirudh Pisharody for more on Bobby’s death.
A major question on fans’ minds ahead of Season 9 is whether their dreams of Bobby waking up in a government lab and somehow returning to his family alive will become a reality? Or if his death is really final? If the latter is true, Season 9 will continue to follow characters as they grieve and heal from their loss. Athena is moving, Eddie and Chris are back home, and Buck is searching for a new place to live. Will there be a time jump? Will Maddie and Chimney’s baby boy, Robert Nash Han, be notably older when the show returns? All valid questions!
Season 9 will likely see characters moving forward with new relationships, milestones, personal and professional challenges, and emergencies. In an interview with UsWeekly, Ryan Guzman said, “You can’t just have the characters be all happy. That’s not gonna be a good show. So we gotta figure something out with Eddie. But I think the next relationship should be something life-changing that it just throws him off for a loop… He’s ready for the next thing to happen. So whenever that does happen, yeah. I think it should happen next season or so.” 9-1-1‘s Oliver Stark also looked ahead and shared Season 9 relationship hopes for his character Buck, telling Swoon, “I want Buck to make his romantic decisions from a much more well-considered place, not because he’s feeling upset about something else or whatever it is. I want him to be in control of the decisions he makes more than anything.”
In an interview with Decider, Pisharody dove deep into his hopes for Ravi in Season 9, including a deeper dive into his character’s backstory and personal life outside the firehouse. (Read our full interview with the 9-1-1 star to learn what else is on his Season 9 wishlist.)
