Irish band Kneecap cancels US tour over member’s terrorism trial

The controversial Irish rap group Kneecap has canceled its upcoming US tour — which included a New York City rooftop show — as one of its members prepares for trial for allegedly supporting Hamas.

The Belfast-based group said it would have to cancel its 15 tour dates, set to start Oct. 1, while Liam O hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, prepares to attend a court hearing in London in late September.

“Due to the proximity of our next court hearing in London to the first date of the tour, as the British government continues it’s [sic] witch-hunt, we will have to cancel all 15 tour dates in October,” the band wrote in a statement on social media.

“With every show fully sold out, to tens of thousands of fans, this is news we are sad to deliver,” the group continued, offering refunds.

The group has been mired by controversy over its vocal criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and the looming famine facing Palestinian refugees.

Kneecap notably celebrated its stance of supporting the “Palestinian struggle” a day after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas massacre in Israel, performing in front of a backdrop that read, “F–k Israel Free Palestine.“

O hAnnaidh has accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza and hit out at the US for its support of the Jewish state.

But he has denied the allegations levied against him by British prosecutors, with the band stating that it does not support Hamas or Hezbollah terrorists.

The Irish band has maintained that it is simply protesting the war in Gaza and lack of food to Palestinians.

UK prosecutor Michael Bisgrove has said the rapper is “well within his rights” to support the Palestinians but not to defy a law that criminalizes displaying signs or banners that give a reasonable suspicion of supporting a known terror group.

O hAnnaidh’s defense is seeking to have the case thrown out, citing a technical error in the way the charge was brought against him, according to the BBC.

While the band canceled its US tour dates, the group said its scheduled Canadian shows in Vancouver and Toronto in mid-October will proceed as planned.
