ICE detainee shot in Dallas fighting for life, pregnant wife says

An illegal immigrant who was shot at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Dallas last week is still fighting for his life, as his heavily pregnant wife says her fifth child is due any day.

Miguel Angel Garcia-Hernandez, 31, a Mexican national, was one of three detainees shot in an ICE transport van at the Texas facility after sniper Joshua Jahn opened fire, NBC DFW reported.

He is currently on life support at Dallas’ Parkland Memorial Hospital after being critically injured in last Wednesday’s shooting, his wife Stephany Gauffeny told NPR

Fellow detainee Norlan Guzman Fuentes, a 37-year-old from El Salvador, was killed in last week’s shooting, while Venezuelan national Jose Andre Bordones-Molina was injured, the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office told NBC DFW.

ICE described all three as “criminal illegal aliens” in a statement to NPR confirming the identities of the victims.

Garcia-Hernandez, who was in the US without legal status working as a house painter, was detained by ICE after being arrested on Aug. 8 for a DUI, Gauffeny said, as she spoke of her fear that he will die before seeing his unborn son.

“It hurts to think like, what if he never even gets to meet him,” she said, describing how difficult it is to visit him in the hospital, where he remains in ICE custody.

“When I first arrived at the hospital, he was shackled, even though he couldn’t move,” she said.

Gauffeny, a US citizen, said she had been trying to secure permanent residency for her husband when he was detained.

The couple met when they were 15 years old, started dating when they were 19, and have been married for a decade, she said.

Together, they have four kids, ages 3, 8, 12, and 14.

“He spoiled them a lot … and they miss him,” Gauffeny said, adding that she hasn’t told the kids what happened to their father.

“I want his name to be known. I want people to know who he really was. He wasn’t just an immigrant or a detainee, or a criminal,” Gauffeny said, adding that she hoped ICE facilities would be provided with more security in the future.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to cover the family’s groceries and bills, as Garcia-Hernandez was the main source of income.
