Hurricane Humberto elevates to Category 5 as new, more dangerous storm Tropical Depression Nine announced

Hurricane Humberto was elevated to a Category 5 storm as it moves through the Atlantic — but a new more dangerous storm, dubbed Tropical Depression Nine, is rapidly developing and could smack the United States in days, the National Hurricane Center said on Saturday morning.

Tropical Depression Nine is expected to only strengthen through Sunday night as it heads into central and northwestern Bahamas and eventually turn into a hurricane that will be dubbed Imelda on Saturday night or early Sunday.

Southeastern states have already preparing with at least one declaring a state of emergency.

“While the storm’s arrival, speed, and intensity remain hard to predict, we do know that it will bring significant wind, heavy rainfall, and flooding across the ENTIRE state of South Carolina,” South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said in a statement declaring a State of Emergency  Friday.

“Now is the time to start paying attention to forecasts, updates, and alerts from official sources and begin making preparations.”

Rain from the storm will also hit the Bahamas, which could get drenched with up to 8 inches, as well as Cuba, which could see up to 16, and Jamaica and Hispaniola, which could get up to 4.

Early next week, the storm is slated to hit the U.S. at or near Category 1 intensity and places like coastal Georgia, the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic states may encounter flooding.

A tropical storm watch was also issued on Saturday along Florida’s east coast from Palm Beach County north to Volusia County.

Humberto, meanwhile, was upgraded on Saturday as conditions intensified — with sustained winds of 160 mph — as headed west, according to Accuweather data.

In just two days, Humberto graduated from a tropical storm with just 65 mph winds as of late Thursday to the severe hurricane level winds on Saturday, Accuweather reported.

The increasingly large storm is expected to follow a course in between the Atlantic coast and Bermuda on Tuesday before turning out to sea.
