How Lane Kiffin’s daughter convinced him to stay at Ole Miss

Ole Miss head football coach Lane Kiffin contemplated taking the job at Auburn in 2022, but an emotional plea from his daughter Landry convinced him to stay.

In a trailer teaser for “The Many Lives of Lane Kiffin” — the ESPN E:60 documentary that delves into the Ole Miss football coach’s legacy on the field and his life as a family man off it — Lane recalled Landry and friends presenting him with a slideshow that made him break down in tears as he was “deciding” his coaching future.

In 2022, Landry moved from Los Angeles to Oxford to finish high school, and enrolled at Ole Miss — while her dad was being courted by other programs after back-to-back winning seasons with the Rebels.

“I was like, I don’t want to go move somewhere else, I like it here,” Landry said of the idea of leaving Mississippi. “Me and my friends we made this slideshow collage to a song we knew he would find sad and just really rethink his decision. And we came into the office and then set it up on a movie projector screen.

“And we were like, ‘We have something to show you, come in here.’ And then he sat down and we played it and he was crying. After that he told us he was going to stay. So, it worked.”

Kiffin said he needed Ole Miss “more than they needed me” at the time.

“I didn’t know God’s plan, I didn’t know he was going to give me a second chance at being an in-person parent,” he said.

“Sometimes you need your kids to point some things out to you and just remind you of things. That was very impactful. I’m not saying I was going, I don’t know that. I was deciding, but that made the decision for me.”

Landry said the two became closer than ever before when she moved to Mississippi.

Lane became the head coach at Ole Miss in December 2019, after he served as the offensive coordinator at Alabama under then coach Nick Saban’s staff 2014-16.

“The Many Lives of Lane Kiffin” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

It comes after Landry and star LSU junior linebacker Whit Weeks made their relationship official on Instagram Monday, posting a cozy photo of herself sitting on his lap.

No. 4 LSU will visit No. 13 Ole Miss on Saturday in a clash of undefeated SEC teams.

Lane had fun with the news in light of the game on social media.

“I really love College Football Lane Kiffin’s daughter, Landry, letting the public know she’s dating LSU LB Whit Weeks, 5 days before LSU and Ole Miss play? This is peak mind games,” Outkick’s Trey Wallace posted, to which Lane replied, “Take the over.”

Weeks, one of the nation’s top linebackers, finished No. 2 in the league in tackles with 125 in his sophomore season.
