Gwyneth Paltrow on ‘very complicated’ relationship with Harvey Weinstein

Gwyneth Paltrow is reflecting on the role she played in Harvey Weinstein’s downfall.

In 2017, the “Marty Supreme” actress, 53, became one of the first Hollywood stars to speak out about Weinstein’s abuse in a bombshell New York Times exposé — a decision that she revisited in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I was very reluctant to speak to a journalist, and throughout the investigation, I didn’t know if I’d go on the record,” Paltrow admitted.

“But during the course of my many conversations with Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey of ‘The New York Times’ I started to understand the depth, breadth and darkness of what had actually transpired, which I did not know,” she continued. “And once I did, I thought, ‘I have no choice here, I have to say something,’ because I knew that me co-signing that would be a big deal.”

Paltrow added, “And I am so glad I did, and I’m so glad there’s now things like an intimacy coordinator. But it was really scary.”

At the start of the #MeToo movement, Paltrow claimed that during a meeting at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel, Weinstein put his hands on her and suggested they go to the bedroom for massages.

She’s also claimed that her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt, confronted Weinstein over the incident and told him to never touch Paltrow again. Weinstein has since admitted that he “definitely made a pass” at Paltrow, describing it as a one-time, almost harmless gesture.

When asked if she felt there were “repercussions” for speaking out against Weinstein, Paltrow told THR, “I don’t think so, no. I was just so angry when I learned everything. And I’m an Enneagram 1 [on the personality test], so when I perceive injustice, I go scorched-earth, and I will die on that sword.”

Paltrow — who made 11 films with Weinstein, including “Shakespeare in Love,” which won her an Oscar — admitted that she had “a very complicated” relationship with the disgraced producer.

“But it was also a great working relationship. We made incredible films together. We sort of got over that weird thing,” she added, referring to the incident between Pitt and Weinstein. “And I was like, ‘OK, that’s behind us.’”

“Harvey and I had lots of other fights about lots of other things, but I had this incredible creative run with him and his company,” Paltrow continued. “And so it’s complicated because I’m so proud of the work that we did, and it’s wild because he was so gifted at finding talent and understanding and nurturing it.”

Weinstein is currently behind bars serving a 16-year prison sentence after his 2022 rape conviction in California.

He was also convicted of sexual assault at his second New York trial in June after an earlier verdict was overturned on appeal. He has yet to be sentenced for the June conviction.
