Giancarlo Stanton’s status for Yankees’ next series will be telling

TAMPA — Giancarlo Stanton does not deal in the world of emotions.

So any frustration with his body not allowing him to play the field over the weekend against the Cardinals was superseded by the acknowledgement that this is his reality.

He still was feeling lower-body soreness from playing right field three straight days last week (for the first time in three years), and combined with the fact that Busch Stadium has a spacious outfield, it meant he was on the bench for all three games.

“I think he’s very in tune and very aware of his body and very mentally disciplined,” manager Aaron Boone said before Monday’s off day. “You see the way he approaches his at-bats and the playoff player that he’s become. He is mentally, incredibly disciplined to all of it. That means being honest with his body, too, and saying where he is and what he’s at and what he’s capable of doing. I just think he’s mentally so disciplined in every facet when he comes to this.”

The next test will come Tuesday against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field, which has the same dimensions as Yankee Stadium, meaning a smaller right field.

Whether or not Stanton plays will be telling.

It will boil the decision down to strictly how his body is feeling and whether the Yankees believe he can play the field again without risking an injury that would sideline him down the home stretch.

Because at some point, presumably, Aaron Judge will be ready to play right field again — though there are no indications that will be in the two-game Rays series — and when that happens, the Yankees need Stanton’s bat back at DH.

“He doesn’t allow himself to be frustrated or whatever,” Boone said. “It’s just like, ‘This is what it is. I got to go. When I do, there’s no excuses.’ So I don’t even think he allows different emotions to creep in. It’s like, ‘When I’m ready to go and when I’m playing, let’s go.’ ”

The Yankees optioned catcher J.C. Escarra to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, clearing the way for Amed Rosario (SC joint sprain) to be activated off the injured list Tuesday, the first day he is eligible.

Before injuring his shoulder crashing into the right-field wall Aug. 8, the right-handed-hitting Rosario was an important bench piece for Aaron Boone.

The Yankees are not scheduled to face another lefty starter until this weekend against the Red Sox, but in the meantime, Rosario will offer a pinch-hitting or defensive replacement option off the bench.
