“We became really, really good friends,” Muniz, 39, said of the beginning of his and Duff’s friendship. “We had a really great relationship for a long time.”
The pair first met as teens when their careers kicked off around the same time. Duff, now 38, starred in “Lizzie McGuire” starting in 2001, while Muniz joined “Malcom in the Middle” for the sitcom’s debut in 2002.
Muniz and Duff became so close that the “Stay Alive” star appeared as himself in an episode of the second season of “Lizzie McGuire.”
However, things took a turn for the worse after Muniz informed Duff’s mom that he was preparing to star in “Agent Cody Banks” in 2003.
“I was on the set of ‘Lizzie McGuire,’ and I was in Hilary’s dressing room and her mom was there,” the actor recalled. “Her mom was like, ‘Do you know what you’re doing this summer? What are you doing this summer?’ And I go, ‘Oh, I’m filming this movie where I’m playing like a junior James Bond.’”
Muniz claimed that Duff’s mom asked whether the film had a female lead and that, by the next morning, Duff was cast in the role.
The “Big Fat Liar” actor, meanwhile, was hoping that “Smallville” star Kristin Kreuk would be cast as his onscreen love interest, Natalie Connors.
“Her mom’s like, ‘Guess what? We’re going to be spending the summer together. She’s doing Cody Banks with you. They signed the contract last night,’” Muniz continued.
“Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled about it. And not because I didn’t want it to be Hilary,” he added. “I don’t know how much I want to say. I’m trying to think about it because I’ve already said way too much.”
Muniz went on to admit that he was “very sad when Hilary’s mom would come on set” before revealing that he hasn’t spoken to Duff “since the last day” of shooting “Agent Cody Banks.”
“I’ve not said one word to her since then. So that’s the truth of that,” he said. “No one knows about my Hilary Duff story.”
But the “My Dog Skip” star also opened up about why he “regrets” ending his and Duff’s friendship more than 20 years ago, and suggested he might reach out to the “Cinderella Story” starlet sooner rather than later.
“I regret not just continuing to be friends with her because we had a great friendship for such a long time, and I let her mom… it pissed me off,” Muniz said.
“I would love to catch up with her,” the actor-turned-race car driver added. “I would love to even talk about that because I’m sure she doesn’t know any of that happened.”
The Post has reached out to Duff’s reps for comment.
Both Muniz and Duff, meanwhile, have kept plenty busy since “Agent Cody Banks” released in 2003.
The “Younger” actress announced her “highly anticipated return to music” after a 10-year hiatus last month, while Muniz is preparing for the release of the long-awaited “Malcolm in the Middle” revival on Disney+ next year.
“I was told not to post this yet, but then I remembered the theme song,” Muniz wrote on X last week alongside a photo of co-stars Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson.
“I’m just too excited for y’all to see the new episodes and I miss my brothers,” he added.
