Frankie Montas demoted to bullpen in $34 million Mets disaster


This is not what the Mets envisioned when they gave Frankie Montas a $34 million contract.

Manager Carlos Mendoza announced before Tuesday’s game against the Braves that Montas is out of the rotation and moving to the bullpen.

The Mets have not determined who will take his place in the starting rotation on Saturday. He will be available out of the bullpen beginning Thursday.

Prospects Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat could be options for Saturday’s start.

After missing nearly the first three months due to a lat injury suffered during spring training, the 32-year-old has struggled mightily since making his season debut on June 24.

In eight appearances (seven starts) Montas has a 6.38 ERA with 32 strikeouts, 12 walks and eight home runs allowed.



The Mets tried using an opener for him during his last appearance on Saturday, when he allowed three runs (one earned) in three innings of relief.

Montas signed a two-year contract with the Mets during the offseason that carries a player option for 2026.

The Mets (63-55) entered Tuesday on a seven-game losing streak and having lost 11 of their last 12 games.
