Americans are facing terrible air travel delays on Sunday after the government shutdown entered its 40th day — with La Guardia and Newark Liberty International airports among the hardest hit.

About 5,700 US flights were delayed on Sunday, with 1,857 cancellations, according to the FlightAware online tracking site.

La Guardia led the outgoing delays with 252 flights being rescheduled, about 47% of total flights, the highest in the nation — with Newark Liberty seeing 224 departing flights delayed.

The average delay at Newark were about two hours and 14 minutes; the delay at LGA was two hours and it was 15 minutes at JFK.

All three airport cited FAA staffing issues due to the shutdown as the reason for the delays.
