FIFA Club World Cup picks, best bets
June 25, 1982, is a date that lives in infamy in international soccer.
On that day, West Germany defeated Austria, 1-0, at Estadio El Molinón in Gijón, Spain, in a group-stage match of the 1982 World Cup.

That game would be forever remembered as “The Disgrace of Gijón” because it became obvious that the two teams had an unspoken agreement on how the match would play out.
Knowing that a win by West Germany by exactly one goal would see both teams through to the next round of the World Cup, while also eliminating Algeria, neither Austria nor the West Germans really gave an honest effort after the latter took an early 1-0 lead.
The backlash from the match was vociferous, as the entire soccer world knew what had gone down. Algeria, which upset West Germany earlier in the tournament in one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history to date, played its final match two days earlier, which allowed West Germany and Austria the opportunity to plot their course.
The match ended, predictably, 1-0 in favor of the West Germans.
And while FIFA cleared the two teams of any wrongdoing, they also implemented a change to the schedule that is still utilized today.
From that point forward, almost every soccer tournament schedules every final match of the group stage to be played at the same time, thus making it very difficult for teams to pull off another “Disgrace of Gijón.”
But sometimes, it is unavoidable.

Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras prediction
(9 p.m. ET, TBS, DAZN)
On Monday night, Inter Miami and Palmeiras will play their final match of the group stage at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The two teams are tied atop Group A with four points, putting them three clear of Porto and Al Ahly.
The winner of Miami vs. Palmeiras would win the group, but the loser would be in serious jeopardy of being eliminated. A draw, however, would see both teams qualify for the knockout stages.
That’s why oddsmakers have slapped such a short price on the draw on Monday night.
At the time of writing, Palmeiras is a slight +115 favorite on the three-way moneyline, with the draw as the second-most likely result at +135. Inter Miami, interestingly, is a +450 underdog.

For most soccer matches, the draw hovers between +280 and +320, depending on different variables. But every once in a while, when you get a match with this kind of setup, you’ll see the price on the tie completely tank.
And while most seasoned sports bettors will tread carefully in situations like this, I believe it presents a terrific buying opportunity on the underdog.
It’s clear that bookmakers are protecting themselves against the draw, which has allowed the price on Inter Miami to balloon.
Lionel Messi and the Herons should be the underdog against Palmeiras, one of the best clubs in South America, but the price should not be this long.
Palmeiras has yet to concede a goal in this tournament, and they’ve been a terrific defensive side in Brazil’s Serie A this season, but they’re not an offensive force.
They’ve scored 12 goals in 11 matches in domestic play this season, and just two through a pair of matches at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Palmeiras will want this to be a slow-moving, low-event match, which means the margin for error will be thin.
That means one mistake, or a moment of brilliance from Messi, Luis Suarez, or Sergio Busquets, could tilt the scales in favor of Miami, forcing Palmeiras out of their defensive posture.
That’s the last thing they’ll want to have happen on Monday night.
