Fever’s Sophie Cunningham breaks silence on Sun player who caused season-ending injury
Sophie Cunningham said she’s “really in good spirits” after confirming she suffered a season-ending MCL tear in her right knee in Sunday’s overtime win over the Sun.
During the “Show Me Something” podcast Tuesday, the Fever guard recalled hearing a pop in her knee right away after she collided with Sun guard Bria Harley in the second quarter at Mohegan Sun Arena, where Indiana beat Connecticut, 99-93.

Cunningham also shut down the narrative making rounds on social media that Harley — who is one of her good friends — purposely injured her on a dirty play.
“No, I don’t, because I know Bria and I’m actually really good friends with Bria and I have been waiting to get on the pod so we could talk about this because I didn’t want to tweet it out,” Cunningham said.
“I think that there was no ill intent. I think that it was a basketball play. I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time. She fell. Like, there’s no way that she would go in there and potentially try to hurt me, and so I have nothing but love for Bria.”
Cunningham said she even told her mom to take down a tweet that was critical of Hartley.
Cunningham, 29, was clearly in pain while lying on the baseline holding her knee after she collided with Harley in the second quarter Sunday.
She said she’ll have surgery soon, but did not disclose further details.
“If you’re going to hurt your knee, that is like the best possible case,” she said. “This year, just as a whole, I think the league as a whole, but really us, we’ve just gone through so much adversity. Injury-wise, it’s just been, like you can’t make this s–t up, to be honest.
“… I was just in the paint trying to be help side and someone ran into my knee and it just snapped … I felt a pop right away.
“I’m really in good spirits, because I knew that I hurt myself pretty good. But, I will say, I’m just thankful. I know this is not probably the time to say this, but I’m just thankful to be where I’m at and be with the organization and the girls that I’m with because they have brought life and my love of basketball back. I really am in like weirdly good spirits. I’m thankful to be where I’m at and thankful for the year that I got.”
The Fever signed six-year veteran guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert in a corresponding move.
Across 13 starts over 30 games, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists per game on 46.9 percent shooting.
Cunningham was a key piece on both ends of the floor, especially in the absence of All-Star Caitlin Clark, who’s been out for the last month due to a groin injury.
The Fever previously lost guards Sydney Colson (torn left ACL) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot bone) to season-ending injuries on Aug. 8.
Indiana acquired Cunningham and the No. 19 selection in the 2025 WNBA Draft from the Mercury in the offseason.
The Fever (19-16) play the WNBA-leading Lynx (28-5) on Friday at home and again Sunday in Minnesota.
