Falcons next head coach odds: Where Klint Kubiak stands after triumphant year in Seattle

After a pair of plain Jane 8-9 seasons, Raheem Morris was dismissed from his post as Falcons head coach.

Despite a strong locker room reputation and a four-game win streak to close out the campaign, Morris never mustered enough wins in Atlanta to win over ownership in the long term.

The Falcons’ playoff drought extended to eight years, and now, they’ll seek their fourth coach in that period.

According to DraftKings, Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak leads a stack of familiar names to succeed Morris as a 3/1 odds favorite. Kubiak drew league-wide praise after steering the Seahawks to a 14-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff bracket in his first season commandeering the offense.

He propelled the Seahawks to a franchise-best 483 points, which ranked third in the NFL, and eighth in total yards (351.4 per game). The Seahawks were 18th and 14th in both of those categories, respectively, in last year’s 10-7 finish under Ryan Grubb’s offense.

Kubiak is scheduled to interview for the Falcons job along with calendar appointments with the Giants, Raiders, and Cardinals, too.

But Kubiak’s uncharted head coaching potential headlines a series of other well tenured names, starting with Kevin Stefanski, who appears next at 4/1 to be hired.

The former Browns head coach was relieved of his duties after six years this week following an uninspiring 5-12 season. It was the second straight year that the Browns were the doormat to the AFC North after a playoff berth from an 11-6 run in 2023.

Stefanski was named NFL Coach of the Year that season, and although the Browns broke down systematically since then, he proved to NFL front offices that he can change the culture of the game’s most haunted franchise.

After all, he’s the only coach to lead the Browns to the playoffs since 2003 — and he did it twice.

Stefanski empirically adapts to roster talent, focuses on the “small picture” and deploys a run-heavy, play-action offense. But it’s his defensive emphasis that showed the most results; the Browns were fourth overall in yards allowed and finished as high as No. 1 in 2023.

Stefanski is also scheduled to interview with the Falcons, along with the Giants and Titans.

John Harbaugh’s dismissal from the Ravens after 18 seasons came as the most shocking of the week’s fallout. He was the second-longest tenured head coach behind Mike Tomlin and the Steelers.

After winning a Super Bowl in 2012 and building the Ravens into a consistent contender with 12 playoff appearances, Harbaugh is fielding offers as the coaching market’s top commodity.

The Ravens, 8-9, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021 and failed to meet lofty preseason expectations as a top threat for a Super Bowl. Much of this can be attributed to Lamar Jackson’s several lingering injuries, poor offensive line play, and depth issues in key spots, but Harbaugh’s grip on the team was ultimately deemed tenuous following an elimination loss to the Steelers in Week 18.

Harbaugh is reportedly not expected to begin taking interviews until next week.

Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver are also lined up to interview with the Falcons.
