Cinematographer Dan Mindel is known for his collaborations with J.J. Abrams on big box office hits, from “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” films to “Mission Impossible III,” while his other films include “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Twisters.”
But don’t expect Tom Cruise, Spider-Man or Luke Skywalker to appear anywhere near this rustic-chic Hawaii home, which borders 1,000 acres of protected land on Kauai’s North Shore.

The serene retreat, which feels like its own surreal movie set, sits on 2 acres. It has been a home away from home for Mindel and his wife, Lisa, and their kids for almost a decade. It’s now on the market for $4.47 million, following an extensive renovation earlier this year.
Mindel, who is currently at work on “Gozilla x Kong: Supernova,” told Gimme Shelter that he was drawn to the home’s natural light and “shifting colors” that change throughout the day.
“I’ve spent my life traveling and living in many different places around the world, and when my wife and I found Kauai’s North Shore, this home felt like an extension of who we are,” said Mindel, who paid $1.64 million for the home in 2016.
“Here,” he added, “the nights are silent, the skies are dark, and there’s an incredible freedom that comes with being fully immersed in nature and letting the island guide your days. It’s a weightless, nurturing way to exist with no outside noise, no stress, just a natural reset every time you return.”
The home was built in 2006; the couple then put their own touch on it.
“We shaped and fine-tuned the property into the sanctuary it is now, balanced between two structures that make hosting effortless while keeping daily life open and fluid,” Mindel said. “It’s a beautifully unconventional home, one that feels alive. There’s nothing else quite like it.”
But, he added, it’s now time for someone else to enjoy it.
At 2,502 square feet, the three-bedroom, four-bath dwelling was designed to have an “intimate connection with nature,” the listing notes, and an indoor/outdoor feel. The main residence features high ceilings, Indonesian hardwood floors, skylights, custom triangular windows, a new chef’s kitchen — and a 1,200-square-foot lanai.
Design details inside the main house also include granite and Italian terrazzo, teak accents and polished stone baths.
The property additionally includes a 1,250-square-foot barn, which features custom siding and teak-encased Fleetwood doors.
There are also two outdoor showers and a 24-panel solar system. The landscaped grounds include plenty of fruit trees.
The listing brokers are Tiffany Spencer and Ben Welborn, of Hawai’i Life.
