Ex-Giant, Chiefs Super Bowl champ Richie James retires from NFL at 29


Former Giants receiver and kick returner Richie James, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs in the 2023 season, has announced his retirement from the NFL.

James, a seventh-round pick by the 49ers out of Middle Tennessee State in 2018, played one season for the Giants in 2022 — totaling 57 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns.

He signed with the Chiefs the following season and appeared in nine games — with 10 catches for 114 yards and 20 punt returns for 200 yards.

The 29-year-old James did not play in the NFL last season due to knee issues, making the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win over the 49ers in February 2024 his final game.

He didn’t have a reception but returned four punts for 12 yards in the victory.

“It took time but I have come to realize I am retired from the NFL,” James wrote Friday on X. “7th round out of MTSU. I feel like I was just a ball player to last that long.

“Unfortunately my knee never healed properly. I was playing hurt since ’22. Oh well. I gave everything I got to the game of football.”

Before joining the Giants, James had missed the entire 2021 season for San Francisco following preseason knee surgery.
