ESPNers torch Cowboys after ugly Week 3 loss to Bears

The Cowboys “should feel embarrassed” after being walloped by the Bears on Sunday in a lopsided 31-14 defeat.

That’s the message ESPN’s Damien Woody delivered Monday morning on “Get Up,” where he and colleague Rex Ryan torched Dallas over its ugly defensive showing in Chicago to fall to 1-2 on the season.

“Listen, when you’re playing this Dallas Cowboys defense, man, it’s going to be easy to kind of regain your confidence,” Woody said after the Bears and first-year coach Ben Johnson got their first win following an 0-2 start.

As the discussion continued, the former NFL guard spotlighted Chicago’s first possession in the second half, when they ran the ball 11 times on a 19-play drive that resulted in a DJ Moore touchdown to put the Bears ahead by 17.

“They don’t have any respect for the coach or the players on that side of the ball,” Woody continued. “Rex, you and I know this, when you’re able to run down the opposition’s throat the way the Chicago Bears did to the Dallas Cowboys, it’s embarrassing. If you’re the Dallas Cowboys this morning, you should feel embarrassed by the way in which the Chicago Bears chose the play selection in which they chose to come at you. You showed no gumption, you showed no heart, and listen, kudos to the Chicago Bears, they made a statement: this is how we’re going to play football.”

The Cowboys’ defense — now operating without star edge rusher Micah Parsons, who was traded to the Packers in August after a lengthy contract standoff — has allowed 92 points through the three opening games, the fourth most to kick off a season in franchise history, according to ESPN.

“Just when we thought it couldn’t get worse, this defense comes up with even a worse performance,” Ryan said of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ unit.

“… How did it get worse? How did you get more embarrassed? Because a team ran 11 straight running plays at you, 11 straight in a 19-play drive, I don’t think that’s ever happened in the history of the game. Are you kidding me, that’s how bad this was getting.”

The Cowboys will need to put this loss in the rearview fast, as they’re hosting their old pal Parsons in a “Sunday Night Football” clash against the Packers this week.

Much like Dallas, Green Bay is also itching to leave a Week 3 clunker behind: its shocking 13-10 loss to the Browns.
