Enraged pal of arrested RI prosecutor was trying to ‘slow things down’ when ‘s–t hit the fan’ during trespassing bust: lawyer

The belligerent blonde seen slipping out of handcuffs as her Rhode Island prosecutor pal seethed at cops “you’re going to regret it” was trying to “slow things down” as “s–t hit the fan” during the duo’s wild caught-on-camera arrest, her lawyer claimed Tuesday.

“It was after all, fast and furious,” attorney John Grasso told The Post of chaotic bodycam footage that showed his client, Veronica Hannan, and Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Hogan Flanagan cuffed by police for alleged trespassing at the Clarke Cooke House restaurant in Newport on Thursday.

The chaos unfolded after Hannan paid the check, according to the lawyer.

“She finished her meal, paid the bill and walked out. That’s when s–t hit the fan,” Grasso said.

He blamed her enraged behavior on having no “prior run-ins” with police.

“Perhaps that lack of experience is what caused her to be caught off guard by what you saw unfolding on the video police shared with the media.”

Footage leading up to the arrest showed Hannan telling cops to “relax” while Flanagan demanded the officer shut off his body cam “because of protocol.”

“She’s a f—g lawyer so she knows,” Hannan bragged.

“Well that’s bulls–t lawyer stuff so that’s not true,” the cops said before telling one of the women’s’ husbands “to get your children out of here.”

“I’m sorry, what?” Hannan replied.

Flanagan continued to berate cops while trying to intimidate them with her job title.

“You’re going to regret it,” she screamed as cops finally slammed their cruiser shut, with her in handcuffs.

Hannan also erupted.

“Get your f—g hands off me,” she screamed as she broke away from cops while they tried to handcuff her.

Hannan then kicked the police car door open after they eventually cuffed her, the video shows.

But despite the damning footage, Grasso insisted his client was trying to maintain calm during the wild encounter with the Newport Police Department.

“Those handcuffs came out pretty quickly, police were putting their hands on her (and her husband), and from what I saw, nobody except for Veronica was trying to slow things down.”

Both women were arraigned last week and downed booze before the arrest, according to Boston.com.

The Post was unable to reach Flanagan on Tuesday.

The state Attorney General’s Office immediately launched a review of the incident, the Boston Globe reported.

An employee at the Clarke Cooke House refused to comment when reached by phone.

Since her arrest, Hannan’s lawyer said she’s still coming to grips with how things unfolded so quickly.

“[She] is quite overwhelmed at the moment. This is not a typical experience for her.”
