Ed Sheeran found out about Taylor Swift’s engagement on Instagram

Just shake it off, Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran may be close friends with Taylor Swift, but he wasn’t given a heads up about her engagement to Travis Kelce before she shared the news with the world.

The 34-year-old got candid about how he first learned about Swift’s milestone in an interview with Andy Cohen on Sept. 24.

When Cohen asked Sheeran if he saved the date for the wedding, the “Thinking Out Loud” singer said no.

“How did you find out about the engagement?” Cohen asked.

“Instagram,” Sheeran responded.

“Like everyone else. You didn’t even get a DM in advance?” Cohen pressed on.

Sheeran replied with the same two-letter word, “no.”

Sheeran also hasn’t heard Swift’s new album, “The Life of a Show Girl,” which is set to be released on Oct. 3.

Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, both 35, announced their engagement on August 26.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” Swift captioned the Instagram post of pictures from Kelce’s proposal.

The pair have been dating since 2023, with Kelce traveling with Swift during her Eras Tour, and Swift attending several football games, including the 2024 and 2025 Super Bowls.

Sheeran and Swift have been friends for over a decade. The two first met in 2012 when they collaborated on “Everything Has Changed” and then toured together.

Earlier this year, Sheeran opened up about their friendship on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.

While Sheeran said he sees Swift four times a year, when they do see each other, they have “proper sit-down, six-hour catch-ups.”

He also recounted the time they toured for Swift’s “Red” album in 2013 and 2014.

“I lived in Nashville, and she lived in Nashville,” he told “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper. “And we used to fly to and from the gigs together and do all sorts of [stuff].”

“I literally spent almost every single day with her for about six months,” Sheeran continued.

The singer/songwriter duo collaborated numerous times throughout the years, making hit songs such as “End Game,” “Everything Has Changed,” “The Joker and The Queen,” and “Run.”

In a May 2023 interview, Sheeran told Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 that he is able to have “long” conversations with Swift because “she’s one of the only people that actually truly understands where I’m at.”

“I mean that in itself is kind of therapy as well, because you’re actually talking to someone that genuinely gets it,” said Sheeran. “That has all the things that you feel and have insecurities about, and how other people treat you, or how your family treats you, how your friends treat you. She’s basically in the same sphere.”

In April, Sheeran shared pictures that he found on an old cellphone, including a picture of a jar of jam from Swift.

On the jar, there was a message from Swift, referencing an incident that occurred during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when she was 19.

“Yo Ed—I’m really happy 4 you and I’m gonna let u finish but this is the best JAM OF ALL TIME,” the message read.

The words were handwritten on the label affixed to the jar, which the singer signed as “—T.”

During the awards show, Swift got onstage to accept the award for Best Female Video for her song “You Belong With Me.” Kanye West jumped on stage, took the microphone from her hand, and said, “I’ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”

Sheeran also posted photos of himself and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, when they first started dating.

The couple were childhood friends and got married in 2018. They share two daughters: Lyra Antarctica, 5, and Jupiter, 3.

“Cherry is the biggest grounding force. Like, anytime that anything is a little bit too Hollywood, she’s like, ‘Bro…’ And especially because I grew up with her, there’s always a lens of Suffolk over it,” Sheeran told People in April 2025.

“Like, I tried to build a bowling alley in our in our backyard, and she was just like, ‘Come on, man. You don’t need that,’” Sheeran continued. “She just doesn’t want our kids growing up and it being like, you know, the Richie Rich house.”
