Eagles ripped for ‘sickening’ final play call with offseason of turmoil ahead

The Eagles weren’t exactly the most creative with their season on the line.

In a curious call by offensive coordinator and play caller Kevin Patullo, the Eagles decided to run all four of their receivers on go routes during a game-sealing fourth and 11 from the 49ers’ 21-yard line while down 23-19.

The four go routes are an interesting choice, given you’re bunching up all four of your pass catchers near the sticks.

Making it more bizarre is that the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, drew up cover four on the defensive side, a perfect match for the Eagles running go routes.

“Game on the line, 4th & 11, and this is what Kevin Patullo and Nick Sirianni come up with? Sickening,” former NFL player and analyst Emmanuel Acho posted on X.

“Obviously, the last play didn’t go as we wanted,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni told reporters after the season-ending defeat.

With the Eagles running four go routes against cover four, you’re basically playing seven versus four as the 49ers only rushed four players at quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Perhaps the decision to run four verticals against cover four had something to do with a lack of faith in star receiver A.J. Brown.

Hurts targeted tight end Dallas Goedert on the game’s final play, despite him being locked up in triple coverage.

Brown had a horrific playoff game on Sunday, dropping four passes and getting into a screaming match with his coach on the sidelines in an ugly scene.

The loss for Philadelphia could mean the end of Brown in Philadelphia, as their top receiver did not speak to reporters postgame and was seen hugging his teammates on the way out.

The Eagles enter the offseason in a dicey spot that could result in lots of roster turnover as Brown appears clearly unhappy in the City of Brotherly Love.

While the Eagles book their flights to Cancun, the 49ers will get another shot at the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday with a spot in the NFC Championship Game on the line.
