Dog rescued after falling 40 feet over edge of cliff in San Francisco

A precious pup miraculously survived falling off the edge of a seaside cliff in San Francisco Tuesday when it landed on a ledge and patiently waited for rescuers.

The dog, whose name wasn’t specified, took a 40-foot tumble down a rocky cliffside at Fort Funston around noon, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The brown and speckled dog, which appears to be a German Shorthaired Pointer, was saved by local firefighters who rappelled down the cliffside to reach the trapped pooch in a dramatic rescue filmed by the fire department’s drone camera.

As a member of the rescue team started to scale down the edge of the cliff, the dog appeared to grow antsy and paced in the shadows.

When the valiant rescuer reached the pup, it was cowering against the cliffside, but obliged as it was hooked to the carabiner and, slowly but surely, carried back to the grassy knoll up above.

The confounded canine looked between members of its rescue squad in clear bewilderment once it reached the top of the cliff. Still, it wagged its tail and happily followed one firefighter to the greener pastures away from the site.

The dog was uninjured and returned to its fretful owner — but not before lauding its saviors with some grateful licks, according to the fire department.

In 2024, one “very lucky” Terrier mix named Rippy was saved after falling off a 50-foot ledge at a quarry in Connecticut.

In 2023, the Coast Guard was brought in to help save a German shepherd that plummeted off a 300-foot cliff. The military reported that the dog was injured and seen on footage limping around, but made a speedy recovery after its rescue.
