Does Player 222 Die in ‘Squid Game’ Season 3? Spoilers for Pregnant Jun-hee and Her Baby
Squid Game has never been a nice show to watch. The Netflix hit is literally about poor people being forced to play childhood games to the death, all for the delight of vile “V.I.P.s.” While hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) has somehow managed to survive the never-ending trials thrown his way, his friends have not been quite so lucky. That means that if we want Player 456 to once again live, new fan favorites have to die, right? And no one has captured our hearts quite like the sweet, spunky, and very pregnant Player 222 (Jo Yu-ri).

**Spoilers for all of Squid Game Season 3, now streaming on Netflix**
Even people who usually aren’t keen on spoilers might be anxious to know what happens to Player 222 in Squid Game Season 3 because she’s playing for two. Not only that, but the question of Player 222’s fate becomes more complicated because of events in Squid Game Season 3 Episode 2 “The Starry Night.”
We learn in the Squid Game Season 3 premiere that the next game will be “Hide and Seek,” with those on the Blue team given keys to help them hide and/or escape, while players on the Red team are given knives to hunt the Blues. If Reds don’t make at least one kill in thirty minutes, they will be eliminated.
Jun-hee, aka Player 222, teams up with elderly mama bear Player 149 (Kang Ae-shim) and courageous former marine Player 120 (Park Sung-soon) to evade their hunters. However, during Squid Game Season 3 Episode 2, Jun-hee trips on some stairs and breaks her ankle. This injury combined with the stress of the games causes her water to break. She goes into labor during “Hide and Seek,” with Player 120 and Player 149 helping deliver her baby girl — a “princess” — all while trying to evade detection from the Reds.
Yes, Player 222 has her baby in Squid Game Season 3. Even wilder? The baby is forced to compete in the games!
So what happens to Jun-hee and her baby? Does Player 222 die in Squid Game? Does the baby die? Here’s what you need to know about the fates of both characters known as Player 222 in Squid Game Season 3…
Does Player 222 Die in Squid Game Season 3?
Well, that depends on which Player 222 you’re talking about. For now, lets talk about the original Player 222, Kim Jun-hee.
Player 222 dies in Squid Game Season 3 and here’s how.
First, she and her baby survive “Hide and Seek,” thanks to Jang Geum-ja, aka Player 149. Towards the end of the thirty minutes, a desperate Player 007 (Yang Dong-geun) finally reconnects with his mother, who is sheltering with Jun-hee and baby. Player 149 realizes that her cowardly son has to kill someone or else he will die. She offers herself as his victim, but he can’t do that. So he decides to try to kill Player 222 and her newborn. Player 149 uses the knife hidden in her hair pin to stab her son to stop this. 007 is eliminated and 222 is safe.
In Squid Game Season 3 Episode 3 “It’s Not Your Fault,” Geum-ja begs Player 456 to protect Jun-hee and her newborn baby. The next morning, it’s revealed that Player 149 did this because she was about to die by suicide, meaning she would no longer be around to look out for Player 222.
As the surviving players (and baby) are escorted to the next game, Player 222 also begs Player 456 to help save her daughter. He thankfully agrees. The next game is a terrifying round of “Jump Rope” across a narrow, broken bridge. Gi-hun manages to get the baby across first, safely, and has every intention to go back to help Player 222. However, she knows her broken ankle will doom them both. She decides to die by suicide, falling to her death, and leaving her baby with Player 456.
Does the Baby Die in Squid Game?
The baby lives! In fact, the baby WINS Squid Game. (If you can call what happened winning…)
After Jun-hee dies, it’s decided that the baby will continue as Player 222 in its mother’s place. Meaning that Player 456 has to protect the baby from being literally killed by the remaining scumbags who are all in it to win it for themselves. That ironically includes the baby’s father, Player 333 (Yim Si-wan)!
The final game is a version of Squid Game played on massive towers. The remaining players have to push one person off each tower to their death. While Player 100 (Song Young-chang) leads a vote to throw the baby off first, Min-su (Lee David) falls to his death while hallucinating during drug withdrawal. Player 456 and Baby 222 are able to survive the second tower by egging on a fight between the other characters.
Ultimately, the last three standing are Players 333, 456, and baby 222. When it becomes clear that Player 333’s plan is to kill both his own child and Gi-hun, Player 456 gives it his all to fight back to save the baby. Player 333 eventually falls and dies, but the problem is the game hadn’t officially been started so either Player 456 or the baby Player 222 must die.
The V.I.P.s believe Player 456 will obviously throw the baby to its doom, ensuring he makes history as the first two-time winner of Squid Game. However, this is Gi-hun we’re talking about. He bids farewell to the infant and then makes a final stand, telling all who watch that he’s a human, not a horse to bet upon. He says, “Humans are…” and then gracefully falls to his death. Player 222 wins Squid Game.
The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) is visibly moved by Gi-hun’s sacrifice. He dutifully saves the games’ wee little winner just in time for his brother Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) to arrive on the scene. The brothers don’t reconnect, but six months later, Jun-ho finds a baby wrapped in a 222 sweatsuit on his doorstep. Included is the golden card given to all Squid Game winners and, yes, the prize money is all there.
All of this is to say, Player 222 dies, but she also survives.
Pregnant mother Jun-hee dies, while her unnamed infant daughter gets to live a pampered life in the protection of the show’s most upstanding citizen, Detective Hwang.
