The “Father of the Bride” actress died on Oct. 11 in California. She was 79.
A friend of the late star told People that Keaton’s health rapidly declined “very suddenly” and unexpectedly in the months leading up to her death, calling it “heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”
A source told the outlet that Keaton was “surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private” during her final months.
“Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” the insider added.
The Oscar winner kept her health issues private and appeared happy and healthy while snuggling with her dog in her final Instagram post, which was shared in April.
In a statement, Keaton’s family confirmed she died from pneumonia.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane,” they said.
Keaton’s relatives added, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
