Devin Booker makes NBA history with $145 million Suns extension

The Suns inked star Devin Booker to a two-year, $145 million maximum contract extension that will keep the guard in Phoenix through the 2029-30 season, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Wednesday night.

The extension now gives Booker the distinction of the highest annual extension salary in NBA history, according to the report.

Booker has been a cornerstone of the franchise since he was drafted with the No. 13 overall pick in 2015 and has played in 10 seasons since then with the Suns, holding the franchise record for career points (16,452) and made 3-pointers (1,424).

He is coming off a season in which he averaged more than 25 points per game for the seventh consecutive season, while shooting 46.1 percent from the field.

The extension solidifies the commitment that the Suns have to Booker, especially considering the circumstances.

Booker had signed a four-year, $224 million supermax extension in 2022.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that the Suns were “bullish” about getting an extension done with Booker, and ESPN noted that team owner Mat Ishbia met with Booker on Wednesday in Las Vegas to solidify the deal.

The AAV off the extension comes in at $72.5 million, according to the report, which puts him past the average annual value of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s four-year, $285 million extension, which comes in at $71.25 million.

Ishbia seemed to shut down the idea of trading Booker earlier in the year when he spoke with ESPN in March

“Never happen,” Ishbia said at the time. “It’s silly. So here’s what I’ll tell you: I have Devin Booker in the prime. In order to win an NBA championship, you got to have a superstar. You got to have a great player.”

The Suns are deciding what direction they’re headed in after trading Kevin Durant, but Booker will be part of whatever comes next.
