The veteran signal-caller, 30, has yet to play this season after sustaining an Achilles injury in Week 7 of the 2024 season and then re-injuring it during the rehab process.
“His focus, my focus, is obviously getting him back to playing football, practicing football, which he hasn’t done in over a year,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “So, it’s a good next step for him.”
It is unclear if the 3-9 Browns would put Watson back on the field in a season that has long been lost, especially given his injury history.
Watson started all seven games for the Browns leading up to his injury, hurling for 1,148 yards and five touchdowns along with 148 rushing yards and a score.
The three-time Pro Bowler underwent a pair of surgeries to repair the tendon on Oct. 25, 2024, and Jan. 9, respectively.
He recently rejoined the team in Las Vegas for their Week 12 matchup against the Raiders and will have 21 days to be activated or must remain on the reserve list for the rest of the season.
Watson’s pending return further complicates the future of Cleveland’s burgeoning quarterback room — which is currently led by Sanders and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.
The Colorado product took charge under center after Gabriel — who seized the starting spot from Joe Flacco following the veteran’s surprise trade to the Bengals — suffered a concussion in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Sanders has impressed in two starts thus far, tossing for 358 yards and a pair of touchdowns with an interception — enough to earn him a third start against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at home.
Watson has played in just 19 games since signing his historic five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns ahead of the 2022 season, with his absences headlined by a lengthy suspension in his first season with the franchise, stemming from sexual assault accusations issued against him during his time with the Houston Texans.
Watson’s contract is up after the 2026 season, and the Browns have yet to confirm any future plans with the embattled quarterback.
