His wife, Victoria Beckham — who was in attendance at the ceremony — also got a new title: Lady Beckham.
“I’ve been very obviously lucky in my career to have won what I’ve won and done what I’ve done but to receive an honor like this, of a knight, is beyond anything that I ever thought that I would receive,” the former athlete, 50, told Britain’s PA Media news agency via CNN after the ceremony.
“To be honest, a young boy from the east end of London, born in Leytonstone, and here at Windsor Castle, being honored by His Majesty the King – the most important and the most respected institution in the world – it’s quite a moment,” he concluded.
Victoria, 51, made the suit he wore to accept the honor.
The retired athlete shared that the King had “inspired quite a few” of his looks over the years.
“I looked at old pictures of him when he was quite young in morning suits, and I was like, ‘OK, that’s what I want to wear,’ so I gave it to my wife and she did it.”
He added that King Charles “was quite impressed” with his sartorial choice.
Also tagging along were three of their four children, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14, and David’s parents, Sandra West and Ted Beckham.
Notably absent was their oldest son, Brooklyn, 26, who has had a frosty relationship with his family for the last couple of years.
Brooklyn was in Atlanta at an AdWeek event promoting his line of hot sauces.
David was honored for his “services to sport and charity.”
The former Manchester United player represented England in over 100 international games and is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
In 2015, he launched the “7” fund, which strives to help “children around the world, especially girls, break down the barriers that hold them back.
Beckham, who was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II, has long been an avowed royalist.
After the Queen’s passing in 2022, he lined up for over 12 hours to pay his respects.
