Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya was carted off the field after he took an awkward fall while reaching first base during Chicago’s 4-1 win over the Blue Jays.

The injury occurred in the top of the eighth inning after Amaya hit a chopper to shortstop and was attempting to beat out the throw at first at Rogers Centre on Wednesday night.

When Amaya reached the bag, he appeared to plant his left foot on the corner of the bag, which led to him rolling his ankle and being popped into the air before falling hard on the ground.

As soon as the play stopped, it was clear he was in immediate pain, as first base coach Jose Javier and the team trainer came over to check him out.

After several moments of being looked at, he was placed on a cart and taken off the field.

Amaya was holding his hand over his face as he tried to deal with the pain.

Manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Amaya suffered a left ankle sprain and would be headed to the injured list.

X-rays were negative.

The moment on Wednesday was not only devastating due to the nature of what had happened, but it came just after Amaya had been activated off the 60-day IL stemming from an oblique injury.

“It feels amazing to be back,” Amaya told reporters after returning on Tuesday, per the Chicago Tribune. “Thank God I’m healthy and now [here] to help the boys. … It was a long process, and I was just day by day listening to my body and playing some games down there [in Arizona] and getting the necessary recovery.”

Cubs broadcaster Jim Deshaies may have summed up what happened in the most fitting way.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever wanted to cry for a guy more than I want to cry for Miguel Amaya right now. So disappointing,” Deshaies said.
