He was charged with possession of marijuana (less than two ounces) and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Texas is one of the 26 states where recreational marijuana possession remains illegal. The legalized amount varies from state to state among the other 24 but as much as six ounces – more than three times Turpin’s amount – is legal in New Jersey.

The drug charge in Texas is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. The nature of the weapons charge is unknown.

The Cowboys declined comment.

Turpin, 28, signed a three-year, $18 million contract earlier this year after being named an All-Pro as a kick returner last season. He also had 31 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns.

He made his first Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2022 and his second last season, when he led the NFL with 33.5 yards per kickoff return and scored touchdowns as a receiver, a kickoff returner and a punt returner to become the first player in Cowboys history to complete that single-season trifecta.

Turpin was kicked off the team at TCU as a senior in 2018 after two domestic violence allegations against him. Both cases involved the same woman.

It was three years before Turpin played football again.

He joined the Fan Controlled Football League, The Spring League, the European League of Football and the USFL – where he was the MVP of the 2022 season while playing for the New Jersey Generals – before signing with the Cowboys.

Turpin could be subject to discipline under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, though those penalties typically are not handed out until after the legal process is complete.
