The Two and a Half Men alum stopped by Live with Kelly and Mark on Tuesday, where he chatted with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos about his doc aka Charlie Sheen, as well as his new book, The Book of Sheen.

A clip from the former was shown on the daytime talk show, in which Sheen recalls entering what he believed to be a birthday party for his father, Martin Sheen, but was in fact an intervention for Sheen, himself.

“So I’m looking for something that screams birthday party, and there’s nothing,” he says.

Sheen describes the “really expertly organized circle of people” he encountered in the living room.

“And I think I’m recognizing all of them,” he adds. “But it’s a weird mix. Why would dad have my seventh grade history teacher, Mr. Vincent, at his birthday party when no one’s seen the guy for, I don’t know, 15 years, right?”

After the clip ended, Ripa, who watched the new doc, told Sheen that it’s “such a rollercoaster of emotions.”

“We cheered for you, we cried for you, we were afraid for you,” she shared. “It brought a lot of the recent past back. But this scene is hilariously told about your intervention.”

Consuelos provided more context, noting that what Sheen thought was his father’s birthday party was taking place “really early” on a Saturday morning.

“You show up, and you quickly realize that it’s not his birthday party,” he added.

Sheen quipped, “Yeah, there were a couple of clues before I walked inside. Firstly, there was no balloon on the mailbox. And then my mom stops me in the driveway and she says, ‘Do you have a gun on you?’ And I’m like, no, that’s not normally how I celebrate a birthday party.”

As Sheen said he described in his book, which hit shelves today, “the ‘mmhms’ were descending upon [him].”

“I walk into basically the worst episode of This is Your Life,” he continued, noting that among those in attendance were Mr. Vincent, Rob Lowe, his trainer, and his whole family. “And there was one empty seat… as I say in the book, ‘for the guest of dishonor.’ So it was like, this moment.”

After everyone spoke, Sheen remembered the phone ringing and his father, telling him that “someone needs to talk to you.”

“It’s the unmistakable voice of Clint Eastwood. And he says, ‘It’s a speed bump, kid. You gotta go get tuned up.’”

Ripa chimed in, “That would’ve scared me to death.”

Sheen replied, “The impossible cool factor of that, as I describe in the book, when Captain Willard hands you a receiver with Dirty Harry on the other end. It’s really hard to say no to Dirty Harry.”

Sheen was of course referring to his father’s role in Apocalypse Now and Eastwood’s titular character in the Dirty Harry film series.

“The problem was—and you’ll see this in the doc—there was a plan that we had that same night, and they were expecting Nicolas Cage and myself in Palm Springs to be the judges for a Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest,” he explained.

Consuelos joked, “Inconvenient time to get your life on the tracks.”

Sheen said he was “weighing” what the difference would be if he’s “sober on the 3rd or a little bit later on the 4th.”

“So yeah, we went and judged it,” he admitted.

But Sheen has made a lot of progress since then, telling Live that he’s “coming up on eight years” of sobriety. As Live‘s studio audience gave him a round of applause, Sheen said, “Thank you. Thank you, that’s nice.”

Ripa told Sheen, “Isn’t it great to be celebrated for the really celebratory reasons?”

Sheen agreed, “How about that? Thank you.”
