Cedric Mullins slowly warming up to new Mets home after trade ‘scramble’

Cedric Mullins is coming off his first series in a different shade of orange.

The center fielder, who got his first action with the Mets over the weekend against the Giants, described the quick turnaround he faced after his trade from the Orioles as a bit of a whirlwind.

“Right after the trade, it’s kind of a dash and scramble,” Mullins recalled. “But, everyone here [has] been very accommodating, so it’s been kind of easy to make some adjustments. Just trying to settle in the best I can.”

Mullins, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and a walk in Monday’s 7-6, 10-inning loss to the Guardians at Citi Field, noted it’s “been everybody at once” who’s helped him with the lay of the land.

Call that a big positive in the veteran’s eyes.

“That’s, I think, the beauty of this team, and just the relationship that these guys have as a unit,” Mullins said.

While it took until the second game for him to record his first hit, that is not one of his main focuses at the moment. He’s locked in on other aspects of the game at which he excels.

“It’s going to be defense; it’s going to be running; it’s going to be stealing bases,” Mullins said. “We’re just playing the game the right way and the way I see best fit.”

Those skills are essential for a team to have success, and Mullins does both at a high level.

His performances in the field have saved, on average, two runs for his team, which has him sitting in the middle of the pack of all major league center fielders.

Mullins’ speed on the basepaths has also been important — he entered play Monday with 15 stolen bases this year.

It also comes in handy manning Citi Field’s large center field. Mullins said that he is still getting used to his new territory.

“It’s just a matter of me continuously being out there,” Mullins said. “Like I said, getting used to how quick the warning track can get up on you and things of that nature.”

Even though Mullins has been focusing on getting acclimated, he already has a favorite moment that had to do with a new teammate of his.

“Pete [Alonso] already hitting 250 [home runs]. For me to be a part of two of them, it’s been pretty cool,” Mullins said.
