Cam Ward’s explosive sideline outburst caught on broadcast
A season of frustration hit a boiling point for Cam Ward on Sunday as the Titans were throttled 38-14 by the Colts.
This year’s No. 1 draft pick was seen yelling in frustration at interim head coach Mike McCoy on the CBS broadcast after the Titans elected to punt down 17-7 from the Colts’ 43-yard line on fourth-and-three early in the third quarter.

“If it was up to me, I’d want to go for it every chance I could… that’s what I want to do with my football journey. It was the missed opportunities for us as a team to get a first down, keep the drive alive,” Ward told reporters in Indianapolis after the loss dropped the Titans to 1-7.
“We weren’t down that much at that time, so I was supportive of the decision made, but at the end of the day, we shouldn’t put ourselves in that position, just get the first down on third down.”
The third-down play was a run by Tony Pollard that was stuffed at the line of scrimmage.
Ward said there was not a chance to discuss the decision with McCoy in real time.
“I think I am going for it the second I cross the 50 every time… I want to go for it, I know we’ll end up going for it eventually,” Ward said.
The decision immediately backfired with Jonathan Taylor running for an 80-yard touchdown on the very next play. The Titans then went three and out before another Colts’ touchdown drive sealed the victory for the surprising 7-1 club.
“You know, you look back in hindsight, the last thing I thought they were going to do was have the big touchdown run after that…” said McCoy, who took over for Brian Callahan, who was fired after the team lost five of its first six games.
“Initially, when I said to punt it, you pin them deep and the defense had done a nice job through the second quarter… Looking back at it, it’s one you wish you would have went for it.”
McCoy, who was previously the Chargers’ head coach for four seasons, said he did not hear Ward’s rant in his direction.

“I think I’m a competitor. Our whole offense is like that. Our whole defense is like that. … I just think the biggest thing is we want to be an aggressive team,” Ward said. “Especially with the record we have right now, we have to be an aggressive team at the end of the season to get where we want to be.”
The Titans play host to the Chargers next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET before their bye week.
