The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his four-year rookie deal and provides much-needed depth behind Christian McCaffrey in the San Francisco backfield.

A Robinson trade had been percolating for some time with both sides seemingly agreeing it was time to part ways after he spent three seasons as the team’s lead rusher.

He sat out Monday’s preseason loss to the Bengals and was excused from practice on Wednesday as the team explored its options.

That resulted in Friday’s trade, which will see Washington absorb some of the $3.4 million due to Robinson this season, per NFL Network.

The move leaves veteran Austin Ekeler as the likely incumbent with Chris Rodriguez Jr. and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt behind him on the depth chart.

Newly acquired wideout Deebo Samuel — who came over from the 49ers earlier this offseason — can also take snaps as a running back.

In San Francisco, Robinson likely slots ahead of Isaac Guerrendo in the 49ers backfield.

The Alabama product is coming off his best season so far, rushing for 799 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025.

He’s racked up 2,329 yards and 20 touchdowns in 41 pro games.
