Blues’ Jordan Binnington tries to steal Alex Ovechkin’s 900th goal puck
Jordan Binnington couldn’t rob Alex Ovechkin of a goal on Wednesday night, so he tried to rob him of the puck he scored his 900th career goal with instead.
Ovechkin scored the milestone goal minutes into the second period off a backhander from the side of the net to become the NHL’s first-ever player to score at least 900 goals in their career.

Amidst the celebration of the historic goal, the Blues goalie took the puck out of the net and shoved it down his pants in an attempt to steal the now historic hockey artifact from, presumably, Ovechkin.
But much like his attempt to slide over to make the save, Binnington wasn’t quick enough and linesman Michel Cormier caught wind of what he was trying to do.
Cormier went over to Binnington and told him to fork over the puck, which the goalie did and the linesman skated it over to the Capitals bench.
“I don’t know, maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to him,” the Capitals’ Logan Thompson quipped.
Ovechkin has etched his name into the NHL record books time and time again, just last season breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal scoring record in April and had entered the 2025-26 season just three goals away from 900.
His first goal of the season came on Oct. 17 against the Wild and then he scored again a week later against the Blue Jackets.
“A couple days ago somebody ask me, ‘Do you think about (900)?’ Of course, it’s huge number, no one ever did it in NHL history and to be the first player to ever do it, it’s a special moment,” Ovechkin said. “It’s nice it’s over to get it in the homestand so the fans, my family can be here. It’s pretty cool.”

The Capitals star has been a hockey phenom since he broke into the league in 2005-06, the same year that Sidney Crosby entered the NHL.
Ovechkin has won the Hart Trophy three times in his career, the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2018 and won his first Stanley Cup in 2018.
