Blue Jays’ Tyler Heineman has maybe the worst pitching performance in MLB history
Friday was an absolute disaster all around for the Blue Jays in what was their worst loss of 2025, but Tyler Heineman reached an even greater low.
On a night they could have clinched a playoff berth at Kauffman Stadium against the Royals, Toronto starter Max Scherzer couldn’t get out of the first inning in a 20-1 loss.

He gave up seven earned runs while only retiring two batters.
Things turned worse when manager John Schneider and pitching coach Pete Walker were ejected from the game, and later the team was forced to use four relievers and two position players to take the mound, including Heineman, a catcher.
To cap off the 19-run loss, Heineman reportedly became the first player in MLB history to allow at least 13 hits and 10 runs in a relief outing of less than two innings.
It all went down over 33 pitches.
The catcher allowed his first run on three singles before he gave up three more after Jac Caglianone ripped a 54-mph pitch to right field for a home run to give the Royals a 14-1 lead in the seventh.
The downward spiral only continued for Heineman in the eighth inning.
After a Carter Jensen fly out, he allowed six more runs on eight straight hits before he was relieved by Isiah Kiner-Falefa, an infielder.
Heinman previously pitched one inning during a 15-1 loss to the Red Sox in June and another in a 14-2 win over the Rangers in August.
Prior to Friday, he held an ERA of 9.00.
Now, that has soared to 32.40.
The Blue Jays still lead the Yankees by three games in the AL East while holding the season tiebreaker.
